Every solar quote boils down to one number: dollars per watt ($/W) — the total installed price divided by the system's size in watts. Learn to read that single number and you can compare any two quotes, spot padded financing, and know whether the price in front of you is normal. This guide uses 2026 marketplace data so you know what "normal" actually is.
The short version

Why $/W is the number that matters
A solar quote is a bundle: panels, inverters, racking, labor, permits, and often financing and monitoring all rolled into one dollar figure. That bundle size scales with the size of the array, so the only way to compare two different-sized systems fairly is to divide the price by the watts. A 7 kW system quoted at $19,950 is $2.85/W; a 10 kW system quoted at $26,000 is $2.60/W — the second is cheaper per watt even though its total is higher.
The $/W rule applies to the hardware plus labor price. Not included: interest on a loan, dealer fees baked into that loan, and the opportunity cost of capital. Those live in the financing line — the second most important number on a quote.
What a normal price looks like in 2026
The following figures come from EnergySage marketplace data for residential solar (accessed 2026-08-08) — the same source used for its buyer-run quotes page and state pages:
- United States (12 kW average): ≈ $2.60/W — or about $31,135 for a typical 12 kW system before incentives.
- North Carolina: ≈ $2.34/W (average system 13.9 kW) — the least expensive of the four states sampled here.
- Georgia: ≈ $2.49/W (average system 12.9 kW).
- Colorado: ≈ $2.65/W (average system 11.5 kW).
- Ohio: ≈ $2.71/W (average system 13.3 kW).
Marketplace averages mask real spread: equipment brand, installer, roof complexity and local competition move individual quotes several tens of cents per watt. Use your state's number as the sanity line, not the target — Californian quotes run above the national average under its time-of-use tariffs, while large single-story roofs in competitive markets often land below it.
The four numbers every quote should show
When a sales rep gives you an all-in number, split it into at least these four numbers before signing:
- Equipment + install ($/W): the raw price per watt from the previous section. This is what you compare across installers.
- Financing cost: loans often quote 0% interest and quietly add a "dealer fee" of 15–35% of system price into the principal. Ask specifically: "What is the dealer fee, and what total am I financing?"
- Taxes and permits: sales tax and permitting fees are occasionally separated (or worse, misrepresented as solar cost). Real quotes list them itemized.
- Monitoring and O&M: annual monitoring subscriptions or 25-year O&M riders are common but optional — decide whether they add value you will actually use.
What $/W does not tell you
- The equipment tier. Two quotes at $2.60/W can carry a premium module like SunPower or REC, or a budget module. The difference shows in 25-year production warranties and thermal performance — compare module specs and warranties, not just price.
- Roof-specific engineering. A ballasted ground-mount or a complex multi-plane roof costs more in labor; a quote that ignores your roof's shade plan is priced for someone else's roof.
- Installer quality and local reputation — the cheapest quote tied to a company with a short operating history is a risk a $0.10/W savings does not cover.
Red flags to walk away from
- Quotes 30+ percent above your state's marketplace average with no equipment or roof justification.
- A loan pitch that quotes 0% APR and simultaneously raises the system's price — the dealer fee is real money either way.
- Pressure to sign before you compare. The standard is data, not deadlines: if the deal only exists "today", it can exist tomorrow at any of a dozen installers.
