Is solar worth it in Michigan?
It depends on your utility and your orientation. Michigan's electricity rates are close to the national average, its winters are cloudy, and export credits are avoided-cost rather than retail — so the value of every kWh you generate is the retail rate you avoid by using it yourself (maximized by right-sizing and battery if you have time-of-use rates), not the export rate. With the federal incentive and the 2019 property-tax protection, a well-priced system can still pay back in a normal timeframe.
Does Michigan have net metering?
Not for new systems in the classic form. The old net-metering program (up to 20 kW, month-to-month surplus rollover) closed in 2018 and its remaining customers were grandfathered for 10 years. New customers are credited for exports at each utility's avoided-cost rate set in MPSC rate cases — which today is far below retail — so sizing to your own daytime usage now matters more than exporting.
Are there solar incentives in Michigan?
The main protections are the property-tax exemption for systems up to 150 kW (in place since 2019) and available utility programs (Consumers Energy's distributed rooftop program, DTE's rooftop and community programs).
